Hunter Spanjer is a three-year-old boy who is deaf. The preschooler uses the standardSigning Exact English (SEE) to communicate. Spanjer signs his name using a special sign that specifically and uniquely means “Hunter Spanjer.” Now, the Nebraska school district is demanding that the child change his name, or rather his sign languagerepresentation of his name, because the hand gesture resembles a weapon. The boy’s fight to retain his name and his identity have gained international attention.
Why all the controversy? In an August 28th report, the Huffington Post wrote, “He crosses his index and middle fingers and waves them slightly to signify his name.” However, Grand Island Public Schools’ policy forbids any “instrument” that “looks like a weapon,” with the implication being that a three-year-old’s sign for his own identity somehow looks like a gun.
Hunter Spanjer’s family is understandably furious that the school system would ask a three-year-old to change the sign that represents his very identity. According to the Blaze, the boy’s father, Brian Spanjer, explained, “It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E. [Signing Exact English].” Hunter’s grandmother said, “Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way.” In addition, the youngster has some supporters in high places. Both Howard Rosenblum, CEO of the National Association of the Deaf, and the ACLU are willing to step up to the plate for the young boy as needed to protect his rights.
Is this the only reason though? the reason I ask is the illuminati like to use a symbol similar to this on a regular basis! Coincidence?
