In the aftermath of our TSA story going viral yesterday after being prominently linked on the Drudge Report, the federal agency has issued its usual glib, inadequate response as to why travelers are being forced to have their drinks tested for explosives after they have already passed through airport security.
The TSA’s ludicrous new policy was highlighted yesterday in a video shot at Columbus Ohio Airport which shows TSA agents using a test strip to check travelers’ drinks at the departure gate.
The TSA’s official Twitter account sent out a link to an earlier post on the TSA blog which achieved little other than emphasizing once again how glib, myopic and arrogant the TSA is in failing to acknowledge the sheer idiocy of many of its procedures.
“Blogger Bob” begins by sidelining the issue as “not a big deal really,” adding “Heck, even I have been pulled aside for random gate screening,” as if just because “Bob” has experienced it that somehow makes it OK or normal.
The TSA’s official mouthpiece then reels off the usual trite platitudes about the drinks testing policy being a “necessary unpredictable measure that makes it more difficult to do malice to the transportation infrastructure.”

Belfast International Airport is unveiling a new full-body scanner aimed at boosting security.
The scanner is the first of its kind to be used in Northern Ireland and alerts staff to any suspicious items being carried by passengers.
The technology creates a generic, mannequin-style diagram, highlighting those areas where there are items that require further checking.
The airport said the body scanner creates no images of the person being scanned, and the diagram produced is automatically deleted after it is cleared by a security officer.
The equipment is described as state-of-the-art and is being deployed to meet new regulations set out by the Department for Transport.
John Doran, managing director of Belfast International Airport, said: “Airport security is of paramount importance and we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the millions of passengers who use Belfast International Airport every year.
“The technology employed by the scanner we are rolling out is designed in such a way that it maintains the aviation security in line with the latest Government requirements whilst also maintaining the privacy of the passenger.”
The body scanner, which will go live on Saturday September 8, can detect a wide range of potential threats in a matter of seconds and will be used alongside the airport’s existing security screening systems.
It is expected to make the search process more efficient and less intrusive for passengers. People will be randomly selected for scanning, or on activation of the normal security checks.
They will then pass through the scanner which will produce a diagram of a human figure, highlighting those areas where further checks are required. The airport said government safety regulators concluded that having a body scan in the device does not pose any risk to health.

A businessman arrested for allegedly shooting burglars was “living in fear” after his secluded cottage was broken into three times previously, according to his family.

Andy Ferrie would be “suffering immensely” after being held in custody for almost three days with his wife, Tracey, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, his aunt said.
Gill Walker said the 35-year-old, who runs a caravan and motorhome repair service in rural Leicestershire, was constantly worried that his home would be targeted by criminal gangs after police failed to catch burglars who struck three times before.
She told The Daily Telegraph: “Andrew is a placid and calm person. He is extremely hard-working and someone who is just trying to keep his head above water like any other decent law-abiding person.
“His home has been burgled three times before and I know they were living in fear of it happening again. No one was ever caught as far as I know and it is in such a remote location that they made an easy target.
“It is disgusting that he has even been arrested, let alone been held for this long. He has never been in trouble with the police and will be suffering immensely being locked up. He does not deserve this. He was doing what anyone would do. Andrew would not hurt a fly, he has not got it in him.”

A rogue strain of the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella has been found to have caused deafness in at least two children, it has been claimed.

Katie Stephen, who lost the use of her left ear days after being inoculated as a child, is reportedly the first known victim to prove her case to the Vaccine Damage Payments Unit.
But the 21-year-old has been refused the £120,000 payout for vaccine injury because it is only given to people with 60% disablement.
The measure used by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to decide payouts defines single-sided deafness as 20% disablement.
It comes after a second victim, who lost hearing in both ears, received compensation in a previous case, the paper said.
Miss Stephen’s mother Wendy told the Times: “She wasn’t born this way. This was done to her by the Department of Health. They distributed pamphlets arguing that this was the right thing to do for your child and not just that but the right thing to do for herd immunity in the UK against these three illnesses.”
Paul Breckell, chief executive of Action on Hearing Loss, said: “We are disappointed that the formula used by the Vaccine Damage Payments Unit does not fully recognise the impact for Katie in completely losing the hearing in her left ear.”
Miss Stephen, from Stonehaven, in Aberdeenshire, was 15 months old when she was given the inoculation in 1991.
A health visitor recorded hearing problems at 18 months old, although previous tests had been normal, and in 1996 she was diagnosed with deafness.
According to The Times newspaper, her medical records show that she was deafened by an MMR jab using the rogue Urabe strain of mumps, which was given to 5.4 million British children between 1988 and 1992.

An extremely problematic phenomenon in America today is the ever growing industry of privatized prisons across America, generally referred to as the Prison Industrial Complex, as well as skyrocketing rates of incarceration that leave the rest of the nations of the world trailing behind.
The issue ties together many social aspects such as the connection between the massive rate of imprisonment for non-violent drug use and rampant poverty, as well as the growing political influence of private prison industries and companies that thrive on inmate populations as cheap and economic forms of labor.
As this problem grows larger and larger, the prisons in the United States fill up continuously, based very much on a mentality that years of incarceration can fix pretty much any problem.
The United States has, by far and away, the highest rate of incarceration of any nation in the world, as it imprisons approximately 743 people per 100,000 across the country.
Today US prisons are filled to the breaking point with 2.3 million people, far more per capita than any country in the world; 1.6 times as many as it’s closest competitor, Russia, and 6 times as many as in China.
From 20 years ago, the US’ prison population quadrupled in size to 2.3 million, making building prisons the fastest growing industry in the United States. Seventy Five percent of Americans in prison are there because of non-violent crimes, particularly in light of the “three strikes and you’re out” laws that serve out millions of 25 years to life sentences every year to those that have committed three non-violent crimes like possession of illegal drugs.
Because criminals locked up in prisons lose most of their rights in many states across America, the Prison Industrial Complex creates a population of people who cannot vote, cannot contest their working environments, and can work well below the limits of minimum wage, thus creating a very lucrative field that has become the staple of the economic structure for entire communities, particularly in the Midwest.
