WHEELING, W.Va.—
An anonymous letter that circulated around the Elm Grove area of Wheeling last week has Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler upset.
The letter accused Butler and two of his deputies of “assisting and engaging in a conspiracy to push shipments of heroin and cocaine from Steubenville, Ohio to Wheeling to Southern parts of the state.”
Butler, who is running for re-election, told NEWS9 he is not sure where this letter came from and did not want to speculate if it was a campaign motive.
“Right now, we have no idea where this came from. The content here just makes no sense whatsoever,” said Butler.
The letters were distributed last week on car windshields.
“Someone brought one into me and said, ‘You might want to take a look at this,’” said Butler.
NEWS9 did some research and the flyer includes the phrase, “We are anonymous. We do not forgive, we do not forget. Anonymous is legion” — similar language frequently used by the online hacker-activist group Anonymous.
In the past, Anonymous has taken on the British government, suspected sexual predators and even the Church of Scientology.
It’s unclear whether this flier came from an actual member of the group or a copycat.
