Governor blames coyotes for mutilation
Santa Clara Pueblo Gov. Walter Dasheno said Wednesday that what was reported as a cattle mutilation on the pueblo last month actually might have been the work of coyotes.
“We think from preliminary information that it was coyotes that got to the cow,” he said. “That’s about all the information we’ve got for now.”
According to the Rio Grande Sun, Patrick Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo reported that he found one of his bulls dead and mutilated in a pueblo field on March 22.
He said it looked as if someone had removed its eyes, cut off its genitals and “cut up” its anus, although there did not appear to be any blood at the scene.
Santa Clara Pueblo is immediately south of Española.
