Dear Mr Smith,
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION – EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENTS
Thank you for your request, dated 12th June 2011, for information about Ministry
of Defence (MOD) plans for extinction level events.
You asked about plans that might be put in place if the following happened:
Comet or meteor impact with the Earth.
Other Extraterrestrial or non terrestrial caused extinction level events.
MOD bases much of the emergency preparedness work that it undertakes on the
Cabinet Office National Risk Assessment (NRA), and the publicly-available National
Risk Register (NRR). Both of these documents draw upon the best scientific advice
available to identify and assess those natural hazards which may cause significant
harm to the UK and its citizens.
As part of this process, the UK Government have consulted experts on near-Earth
objects and have found the likelihood of impact of an object of sufficient size to cause
significant destruction to the UK to be extremely low. As a consequence, MOD does not
currently maintain plans for managing the specific consequences of a meteor or comet
strike (including Elenin), nor does it maintain plans for any other events which may
cause extinction of life on earth.
The MOD does not hold any of the information which you request regarding
attacks by aliens, UFOs, or other extra-terrestrials.
If you are unhappy with this response or you wish to complain about any aspect of
the handling of your request, then you should contact me in the first instance. If
informal resolution is not possible and you are still dissatisfied then you may apply for
an independent internal review by contacting the Director of Information Exploitation, 6th
Floor, MOD Main Building, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB (e-mail [email address]). Please
note that any request for an internal review must be made within two calendar months
of the date on which the attempt to reach informal resolution has come to an end.
If you remain unhappy following an internal review, you may take your complaint
to the Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section 50 of the Freedom of
Information Act. Please note that the Information Commissioner will not investigate the
case until the internal review process has been completed. Further details of the role
and powers of the Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioner’s
